This week, Leeds United were honoured to welcome former player John Scott to Elland Road as a special guest for the victory over Norwich City.
John, now aged 96 years old, represented the club between 1950 and 1954. Signed by manager Major Frank Buckley, the goalkeeper made 111 appearances for Leeds, alongside legendary forward John Charles and iconic defender Jack Charlton.
Before the clash with the Canaries, Scott visited the Leeds United Foundation’s Over 50s’ Social Club down at the LUDO Lounge, recalling his memories and stories from his career, as well as looking through scrapbooks of his playing days.
Those snaps included photos of his wedding day with Charles in attendance, as well as the very early days of Charlton’s then-fledgling career!
The weekly Social Club programme is free to attend for participants and is delivered by coaches from the club's official charity at Elland Road Stadium. The sessions include Leeds United quizzes, activities, guest speakers and ground tours and are aimed at benefitting the local community in reducing social isolation, as well as improving mental heath and social interaction skills.
Simon Wood, Health and Wellbeing Lead at the Leeds United Foundation, said: “We were delighted to welcome John down to our session.
“As a former player for the club, it was really interesting hearing stories from Leeds United in the 1950s and listening to John’s stories about playing against such greats as Sir Tom Finney and Sir Stanley Matthews.
“John’s memory was superb recalling individual games and we were really proud to host one of our oldest members of the Leeds United family!”
Following the memorable afternoon, John then met the first team squad prior to the encounter with Norwich, speaking at length with captain Ethan Ampadu and goalkeeper Illan Meslier pitch side, before helping cheer the team onto victory from the Guest Lounge.
