Carlo Ancelotti expressed his belief that Luka Modric should remain at Real Madrid for as long as he wishes, suggesting that the Croatian midfielder could extend his contract for another season.

If that happens, Modric would continue playing at the highest level until he reaches the age of 40, a remarkable feat in modern football.

The veteran midfielder played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s latest victory, bringing an end to a frustrating three-game winless streak in La Liga.

Ancelotti sees Modric as an extraordinary figure in football, acknowledging that his presence is a privilege for Real Madrid. “Modric is a great gift for football,” said the Italian after beating Girona.

The Italian coach emphasised how lucky the club is to have a player of such stature, one who has defined an era with his quality, leadership, and professionalism. He believes that Modric still has plenty to offer and should continue his journey with the club.

“He has to stay as long as he wants because he does what he does very well. Real Madrid is lucky to have a legend who has marked an era and football is a great gift for his quality and professionalism,” added the manager.

Drawing comparisons to another footballing icon, Ancelotti recalled his experience managing Paolo Maldini, who won the Champions League at the age of 40.

The coach sees strong similarities between Maldini and Modric in terms of their longevity, dedication, and ability to maintain the highest standards.

“I have an example of another 40-year-old player who won the Champions League like Maldini. The two can be compared in terms of what a footballer has to be. They are fantastic examples.”

With Ancelotti’s backing and Modric continuing to deliver on the pitch, it would not be surprising if Real Madrid offered the Croatian a contract extension.

“It’s no coincidence that we’ve reached this age. Genetics are an important factor, but above all, seriousness, commitment and attitude, which is the only way to reach this age like Maldini did and Modric is going to do,” added the manager.
