Today, the 12th March of 2025, Tottenham Hotspur utility player Archie Gray turned nineteen years of age. It is hard to believe he is still so young given how much he has played in his professional career so far. To mark the occassion, let's look back on his time in North London so far.
In the summer, Spurs moved to bring Gray in from boyhood club Leeds United, despite serious interest from fellow London side Brentford. The teeneager had seriously impressed with his performances in the Championship, despite playing out of position at right-back.
If Gray thought he was given a tough hand playing out of position in the Championship. then he hadn't seen anything yet. A season of playing mostly at right-back sounds pretty stress free compared to his maiden season at Spurs.
Despite being a midfielder, Gray has played pretty much everywhere except in midfield. After playing at left-back and right-back in Europe and the Carabao Cup during the early parts of the season, he has mostly played as a central defender in the past few months.
Back in August, Gray made his Spurs debut on Premier League opening weekend, in a 1-1 draw at Leicester City - replacing Rodrigo Bentancur in one of his very few midfield appearances. He made his first start for the club in the Carabao Cup third round win over Coventry City back in September, playing the 90 minutes as a right-back.
Then, he made his European debut in a 3-0 win over Qarabag in the Europa League, again playing the 90 minutes at right-back. In a 2-1 win over Ferencvaros in the same competition one week later, he played the first 45 minutes in central defence, before playing the second half as a left-back.
Ever since late November/early December, he has been a regular fixture in the side, although as mentioned before, mostly in central defence. He has some good games and some bad games there, but overall as someone who was 18 for all of those appearances, he did pretty well.
Spurs did not sign Gray as a central defender. Despite playing as a right-back for Leeds on a number of occasions, he was not signed to play there either. He was signed to play in midfield. It is now March, and the only time he has started a game as a midfielder this season has been whilst representing England U21s.
Said it a number of times before, but really hope at some point - ideally sooner rather than later - we will see the now 19-year old thriving in midfield, where we can all say "remember when he was stuck at centre-back?"
