Arsenal advance to League Cup semi-finals with four-goal victory at Brighton | OneFootball

Arsenal are into the quarter-finals of the Subway Women’s League Cup after beating Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at Broadfield Stadium this evening.

The trophy holders advanced to the last four thanks to goals from Frida Maanum, Katie McCabe, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Mariona Caldentey.

Despite Arsenal chalking-up a large winning margin, the first half produced no goals. Kyra Cooney-Cross forced a save from Brighton & Hove Albion keeper Melina Loeck before Kiko Seike’s rushed chance was put wide at the other end. Alessia Russo then directed a header straight at Loeck before Katie McCabe’s free-kick was cleared by Madison Haley.

After dominating the first half, Arsenal continued to put pressure on the hosts in the second period and on the hour mark, substitute Caldentey hit the post.

The evening’s scoring was finally opened by Maanum in the 65th minute. She gave Arsenal the lead after Caldentey had regained possession of the ball following a defensive error from the hosts.

The Gunners’ lead was doubled three minutes later when McCabe netted with a close range tap-in.

Cooney-Cross then extended the North Londoners’ lead with a first time strike into the top corner before Caldentey rounded-off the scoring with a long range effort, adding to her two assists.

Arsenal’s reward for their victory in Crawley is a home tie against Manchester City in the Subway Women’s League Cup semi-finals.
