Gunners increasingly short of options heading into final two Premier League matches of the season
Arsenal’s injury problems continue to grow heading into the final two weeks of the season.
Mikel Arteta has had a depleted squad for much of the campaign and that situation shows little sign of improving, with the Arsenal boss’ problems added to ahead of matches against Newcastle and Southampton.
Declan Rice missed the draw with Liverpool on Sunday and Jurrien Timber also has an injury issue, while Leandro Trossard was forced off.
With Mikel Merino now suspended, Jorginho an injury doubt and the likes of Gabriel Magalhaes, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Gabriel Jesus long-term absentees, there is plenty for Arsenal to contend with.
Declan Rice has been one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers this season, but was not in the squad for the trip to Anfield on Sunday.
Arteta revealed that the midfielder did not train in the build-up to the clash and asked for an update after the match, he suggested it was a hip issue that kept Rice out against Liverpool and left him as a doubt for the Newcastle clash.
"I think he is struggling, it does not look good,” Arteta said.
After playing 83 minutes in midweek against PSG, Jurrien Timber dropped to the bench at Anfield and was replaced by Ben White.
The Dutchman was never an option to come on, with Arteta stating: “With Jurrien we brought him to see if he was better but it was clear that he was not fit to play.”
However, the fact he travelled would suggest it is not a serious issue, and Timber now has a full week to recover in time to face Newcastle.

With Rice out and Mikel Merino having to drop back into midfield, Leandro Trossard came into the side to lead the line against Liverpool.
The Belgian was more effective when drifting out to the left wing in the second-half, but he was then forced off after appearing to hold his left hamstring and signal to the bench.
No update was provided on Trossard’s fitness by Arteta after the match.
Potential return date: Unknown
Kai Havertz has been out since the start of February with a hamstring injury.
That was initially expected to keep him out for the rest of the season, but the German has been swift progress and Arteta suggested earlier this month that Havertz could feature again before the end of the campaign.
The Arsenal boss said: “I think if everything goes the way it's going at the moment and the way it's planned, I think he will have a chance to play a few games here in the season.”
Time is running out, though, with Arsenal only having two matches left in the season.

Jorginho was named in the squad for the second leg against PSG, but that appeared to be so he could act as effectively another coach on the touchline.
The midfielder was not involved at Anfield, and has now missed the last four Premier League matches with what is believed to be a lung injury.
With Jorginho expected to leave the club in the summer, it remains to be seen whether he has made his final appearance for Arsenal.

There is far more certainty over Gabriel’s injury status, after he underwent hamstring surgery last month.
The Brazilian’s season was therefore brought to a premature end, as he now bids to recover in time to be ready for the start of the new campaign.
An Arsenal statement said: “Further to being substituted during our match against Fulham on Tuesday, we can confirm that Gabriel Magalhaes has sustained a hamstring injury which requires surgery.
“Gabi will undergo a surgical repair procedure to his hamstring in the coming days, and immediately begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, with the aim to be ready for the start of next season.”

It has been a hugely frustrating season for Takehiro Tomiyasu, who has made only one appearance.
A persistent knee issue was among his injury problems, with Tomiyasu having surgery in February in a bid to finally put his problems behind him.
The Japan international posted a statement on Instagram: “I’ve had a surgery on my knee few days ago and I’ve already started my rehab to do what I love the most again.
“It has been the toughest period in my career for sure and it carries on a bit more but I won’t give up. Thank you for your support and see you again.”
Potential return date: Unknown
Gabriel Jesus has been out since suffering an ACL injury in January’s FA Cup loss to Man United.
The Brazilian had just started to find some form, but picked up that serious injury to his left knee and it would appear to be a stretch for him to be back in time for the start of next season.
Potential return date: Autumn 2025
