Aston Villa manager Robert de Pauw says that his side are in a good place despite their winless start to the new Barclays Women’s Super League season.

The Villans have taken one point from their opening three matches. Aston Villa have entertained but they are yet to convert positive performances into wins.

When speaking in an Aston Villa press conference, manager De Pauw gave his assessment of his side’s opening three fixtures. He is pleased with what he has witnessed but says that The Villans must get the finer details right.

“When you look at it before the start of the season, you see the three games and it’s Chelsea away, tough job, Tottenham who were quite good last season and then Brighton away, a club who have brought in good players and a coach with a good philosophy,” De Pauw said.

“Against Chelsea, we could have got more out of it, Spurs, to be critical, we should have won that game and Brighton was a little bit unlucky but we also made mistakes in moments where we shouldn’t have.

“I think we are in a good way. We see the progress that we are making and the type of football we are playing. The little details make the difference in this league, so we have to improve on every detail that makes us lose or win games. That’s the position that I think we are in at the moment.”

De Pauw went on to highlight the nature of some of the goals conceded and said that some out of possession issues have been addressed.

He said “I do think there are thngs we need to improve. If you look at the first goal, we had four mistakes behind each other, so this is something that we have addressed. It was similar with the last goal against Spurs, so there were some tough words and we mentioned conceding quickly after a restart. Sometimes, that’s the process that you have to go through but the players are really eager to keep going and do the things that we set out at the start of the season.”

Aston Villa play host to Leicester City at Villa Park this weekend and De Pauw says that both sides will be battling hard to get that first win.

He said “It’ll be two teams battling for their first win. I know Leicester quite well and I think they have some good players; [Noémie] Mouchon is a good player, [Jutta] Rantala is a very good player and I like [Yuka] Momiki and [Saori] Takarada, the Japanese players. There is quality in their squad, so we have to be ready.”
