With their financial troubles making it difficult for them to compete with other big clubs across Europe in the transfer market, FC Barcelona have taken advantage of the contractual situation of some of the top players to incorporate them into their teams without paying excessive fees for them.
This has been the case in the last few years, when the Blaugranes brought in the likes of Franck Kessié, İlkay Gündoğan, Iñigo Martínez, etc., on free transfers. Similarly, they were also able to land Robert Lewandowski despite Bayern Munich’s reluctance to part ways with him mainly because there was only one year left on his contract.
The Catalans can see themselves involved in a similar operation in the upcoming summer transfer window as well, as Fichajes reports that they are interested in the Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, who is currently a key player for the Italian side, but whose contract, expiring in 2026, can give them a chance to land him for a reasonable price.
As things stand, Juventus are not too keen to part with such an important player, but Barcelona believe they have a chance of getting him mainly because of his contractual situation. In this regard, the Catalans believe a €15 million offer can do the trick for them, especially if the 26-year-old player himself shows some interest in joining them.
If such a possibility actually ends up realizing, McKennie would be quite an addition to Hansi Flick’s squad. The German would be keen to have him for his versatility, as he can play across the midfield, and also in some offensive roles.
However, there are some other areas of the team that Barcelona will be looking to reinforce ahead of the midfield, and it remains to be seen whether there is any actual movement in this direction in the coming weeks and months.
