Barcelona were greeted with great news on Wednesday morning as multiple reliable sources reported that key defender Ronald Araujo had changed his mind and decided to stay at the club after seeking an exit this month.

Juventus were eager to sign him and were prepared to go all out for the 25-year-old but Barça held firm against their offers and sporting director Deco managed to convince him to stay put, with a contract renewal also on the horizon.

Doors open for Andreas Christensen or Eric Garcia

Following the U-turn in Araujo’s future, SPORT reports that Barcelona are considering the possibility of allowing one of their central defenders to depart during the winter transfer window if a significant offer benefits all parties involved.

After firmly rejecting Juventus’ interest in Araujo, the Blaugrana may now be open to listening to proposals for Andreas Christensen or Eric Garcia.

This potential move would help address the squad’s surplus of defenders and create room in the wage budget for reinforcements in the offensive line.

Barcelona have a well-stocked defensive roster, with Araujo, Christensen, Garcia, Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez. With limited playing time for some defenders, Barcelona could seize this opportunity to adjust the squad balance.

Garcia has attracted strong interest from Girona, while Christensen is a sought-after figure in the Premier League despite recently recovering from a four-month injury. While coach Flick values both players, the club is prepared to explore the market for the right deal.

Barcelona’s improved salary cap situation, following the return to the 1:1 financial rule, offers more flexibility in reshaping the squad. The sale of a defender would provide financial leeway, potentially enabling the acquisition of an offensive player.

Flick has expressed interest in a forward capable of playing on the wing and contributing goals. Among the options being explored is Marcus Rashford, although any deal would require the club to save or earn at least €6.5 million.

While defensive departures are under consideration, Barcelona’s management is also examining opportunities in midfield and attack.

Frenkie de Jong has been speculated as a potential outgoing player, but the Dutch midfielder has made it clear he has no intention of leaving. Forwards, such as Ansu Fati, could also be offloaded.
