Bayern Munich had plans to strengthen the attack in the winter transfer window as they showed concrete interest in Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku. The French forward was eager to join Bayern, but the overall deal was too expensive for the Bavarian club.
Die Roten are expected to strengthen the attack in the summer. They are looking to rejuvenate the squad by signing young players to replace the senior wingers in the squad.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz is the top target for Bayern to strengthen the attack in the summer. Wirtz has been one of the best attacking midfielders in the Bundesliga over the last couple of seasons. He can also play in the wide positions, making him a tactically flexible forward.
While talking to the media on Friday (via AZ), Max Eberl admitted that Bayern can definitely dream about signing a player of Wirtz’s caliber in the next summer transfer window. However, Eberl is currently focussing on sorting the contracts of several senior players in the squad.
"Christoph Freund has already said it - Dreaming is allowed. We want to finalize our contracts, our 'internal transfers', first. And then we'll see what's possible"Max Eberl
Meanwhile, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen also refused to play down the club’s rumoured interest in Wirtz. Dreesen insisted that the best German players are always transfer targets for Bayern as they want to have the best talent from the country in the squad.
It is going to be a difficult deal to pull off since Bayer Leverkusen are keen on keeping Wirtz. Even if the youngster wants to move away from Leverkusen in the summer, the club wants him to go abroad instead of joining Bayern.
From financial point of view, Bayern will have to cough up a nine-figure fee to sign Wirtz. He is currently contracted with Bayer Leverkusen until 2027. Several reports in Germany have suggested that the defending Bundesliga champions are ready to offer a new deal to Wirtz in order to fend off interest from Bayern.
Apart from Wirtz, Bayern are also interested in signing Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. The English winger is one of the top transfer targets for Die Roten to strengthen the wide positions. Depending on departures in the attack, Bayern may look at Nkunku in the summer.
As things stand, the futures of Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, and Kingsley Coman are uncertain at Bayern. Sane could become a free agent in the summer, while Die Roten will be open to listening offers for Gnabry and Coman. Bayern will have to generate funds from sales to sign talents like Gittens and Wirtz.
