Intriguing to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United progressing to the FA Cup fourth round with a 3-1 win over Bromley
United making it eight wins in a row.
The comments from neutrals especially telling…
A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.
The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion though, the politics (almost!) entirely absent, concentrating on matters on the pitch…
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Bromley fans and the odd Newcastle United supporter also contributing:
‘Tougher than playing sunderland last year. Fair play Bromley, safe journey home.’
‘Good effort by the Bromley fans today – game switched to a Sunday for TV, a death o’clock start, a 600 mile round trip and 14 flights of stairs.’
‘Yea when are the away fans gonna be moved to the lower bowl?’
‘They won’t in this stadium. Its the only part that is seperate to the rest of the stadium. That alone forces the police and council to request the away fans to be there.’
‘Who was that hopeless commentator today? Newcastle in Northumberland??? Mistaking osula for joelinton??? Both a few times. Really poor. Good effort by Bromley.’
‘Also mentioned that we were in the final twice in the 90’s losing to Arsenal one year then …. Newcastle United the next. I know we were not very good in both finals but it seems we beat ourselves in 1999. Perhaps it was a parallel universe or something.’
‘I do respect a sold out stadium for a game of this type. Nicely done.’
‘arsenal played man u and even then they had empty seats!’
‘Cracking effort Bromley flying the flag for L2.’
‘Credit to Bromley, players can hold their heads up high and made some of our 2nd stringers look very poor. Great seeing Miley back, showing such maturity for a young lad and a cracking goal from Osula.’
‘Eddie Howe deserved the England job, he is quite correct in feeling snubbed by the FA. I’m convinced he will move on to bigger and better things.’
‘How can he feel snubbed for a job he did not want???’
‘Eddie Howe is by far and away the best English manager. He will do the job at Newcastle and when the time is right he will move to a bigger club. I’m talking Real M, MU etc. He’s too good for the inept FA.’
‘Probably the next Arsenal manager as it’s the only way they’d beat Newcastle.’
‘Bromley played well but Newcastle showed their class.’
‘Brilliant first time visit to St James’ Park and Newcastle Upon Tyne, class to see us score first as well!’
‘Newcastle still on a roll, what looks good is we have players on the bench that can come on and change the game which is vital, well Played Bromley good showing against one of the form sides in the country, maybe this is the year Newcastle win a cup!!’
Maybe? That’s a tad dismissive of their 4th round opponents though, isn’t it? Birmingham City are a League 1 club, but are having a half decent season and have achieved a Wembley win this century, which the Magpies haven’t managed. They will be very pleased to hear that NUFC fans are already planning the open-top bus ride around the town.’
‘With Saudi money…..sad!’
‘How long has it been? Arf Arf’
’56 years, only 4 years longer than Sunderland.
Distant past now, of the two teams who is most likely to win silverware next?’
‘Bottlers’
‘To be a bottler firstly you have to put yourself in a position to win something, which Sunderland will never do. Would rather be a bottler than a no hoper.’
‘Another cracking performance from a lower league team. No “dark arts” were needed. From a Southend Supporter.’
‘Hope we draw Sunderland away in round 4. Should get 2 full stands ticket wise, judging by the pathetic turn out yesterday.’
‘How can we draw in Sunderland in round 4 when they got beat off stoke ?’
‘Compare the positive attitudes of both teams in this game with the negative dross being served up by Manchester United against Arsenal.’
‘Got to ask… how have you watched both? They kicked off at the same time.’
‘Easy, watch one on tv. Other one on iPad via BBC Iplayer. It’s called technology!!’
‘Great moment for Bromley to take the lead, but that’s all they were going to take today.
Newcastle apparently flying the flag for the whole North East in the FA Cup now.’
‘Lewis Miley needs to be nurtured and developed. If that performance was much to go on, he can one of the worlds best!’
‘good game to watch with some cracking goals. Bromley can be proud of themselves-hope they have a good night in the toon!’
‘Always good to have the Geordies grace St Andrews. Hopefully it should be a good game and a good test of where we are as side at present. See ya all in Feb.
Would you prefer a night game?’
‘52000 at home to Bromley. I tip my hat Geordie boys.’
‘My apologies if this has been said already…but well done NUFC for putting out such a strong team…You deserve the success that comes with it.
Props to Bromley as well.’
‘We started Joelinton and Dubravka (who is usually number 2 keeper) but all the other starters were squad players. Still a strong team, as you said, but far from our strongest.
It bodes well that 4 of our next 5 league games are at home (and there’s the home cup leg), and the away game is at the bottom club! This winning streak could get longer…’
