In an interview with The Athletic, Girondins de Bordeaux striker Andy Carroll (35) revealed that he intended to finish his career with Newcastle United.

The former England international was born in the city and came through the academy before making his professional debut for the St James’ Park club. Carroll went on to make 92 appearances at the Premier League club before joining Liverpool for a club-record fee of €35m. The 35-year-old’s move to Anfield did not work out as he would have liked.

Following a 7-year spell with West Ham United, the English striker returned to his boyhood club for two seasons. The forward envisaged staying at Newcastle until he retired but that wasn’t to be the case when he wasn’t offered a new contract at the end of the 2020/21 season. Carroll went on to play for Amiens and Reading before signing for Bordeaux.

The Bordeaux forward revealed he never envisaged playing in France or anywhere else for that matter when he returned to Newcastle in 2019, “I always wanted to go back and once I did, I thought, this is me now, I’ll be here until I am 35 and that will be me done.” He commented on his emotions when he wasn’t offered a new contract, “I was gutted that I didn’t get another contract or even a phone call. At that point, I thought, do I just call it here?”.
