A game with plenty of talking points.

Minteh giving the home side a first half lead.

Then just before the 90 minutes were up, United deservedly got the equaliser.

Alexander Isak coolly sending the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Newcastle United player ratings:

Pope – 6

He didn’t have any chance with Brighton’s goal, especially with the deflection.

He didn’t really have anything to do.

We do tend to avoid him during open play for obvious reasons but he did everything he needed to today.

Trippier – 7

Was a calming presence at all times and made several crucial interventions when Brighton forced the play down his side.

If we manage to seal Champions League it will be massively down to Trippier’s contributions. For me he’s already a club legend.

Schar – 6

Once Gordon came on, Schar was immediately ready to rake passes out in his direction and he almost won us a penalty immediately.

He made some important interceptions during the game but also had one or two hairy moments when he was outmuscled by Welbeck and Minteh.

Burn – 7

Was very calm defending within our own box and made some excellent covering challenges when Brighton tried to exploit space in behind Tino Livramento.

I nearly marked him down for some bizarrely misplaced headers but his strength and intelligence at the back was important.

Livramento – 6

Troubled Brighton on numerous occasions with marauding runs but he was got at on more than one occasion by Minteh and he allowed him inside too easily for the Brighton goal.

His final ball was also poor today.

Tino has put some decent balls in during recent weeks but those were missing today.

Bruno – 6

A relatively quiet game from our captain.

He got on the ball lots, especially in the first half, threaded a few balls in behind the Brighton back line.

He did make one or two ill-advised turns and passes late on trying to force things, which could have cost us. A habit he needs to shed from his game.

Tonali – 7

Made some crucial covering challenges throughout the game and kept play ticking over with decent tempo.

He nearly got caught by Minteh at the end of the first half where he clearly felt a shout from his keeper was lacking but he recovered the situation well.

He was also on the wrong end of a shocking challenge that went unpunished from the fortunate Wieffer.

Willock – 6

A frustrating “nearly” afternoon for Willockinho.

He very nearly scored from one of a few marauding runs in the first half, although he probably should have squared the ball to Isak.

He nearly had a penalty in the second half but went down too early and earned a yellow card for his troubles.

He could do with watching a few videos of Jamie Vardy moving forward.

Murphy – 5

Not sure if I’m being harsh on this one but Murphy looked a little slow throughout the game and lacked any real quality in his delivery throughout the game.

He did get in plenty of promising positions but failed to deliver from any of them.

Isak – 8

He had one of his quieter days with his teammates unable to find him in the box throughout the game.

However, cometh the hour cometh the man.

Huge pressure on him with a penalty in the 89th minute and he never looked like missing. Ice Cold.

Barnes – 7

He got himself into the Brighton box all game but was left frustrated, unable to pick out a teammate or the back of the net.

He did look like our biggest goal threat throughout and on another day, he may have walked away with one.

Subs

Gordon – 7

Beginning to look back to his menacing best.

He immediately put Brighton’s defence under pressure and was centimetres away from earning a penalty.

I imagine he’ll earn the nod over Murphy next Sunday when we welcome Chelsea.

Wilson – 6

Very nearly won us the game in stoppage time.

I think he made a decent contribution off the bench.

We’ll need him to find the net before the end of the season to help us seal Champions League qualification.
