It doesn't look as though the Clarets are prepared to let go of Trafford without a fight, amid the shot-stopper's links to the Magpies.

Newcastle United may be prepared to wait until the summer to move for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

According to The Athletic, the Magpies are more likely to revisit this deal during the next transfer window, despite making a £16m bid for the Clarets' star during the previous window.

Ex-Manchester City talent Trafford looked to be one of the favourites to leave Turf Moor during the summer of 2024, having been linked with a move away from Turf Moor.

Aro Muric, Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Lawrence Vigouroux may have left the Lancashire side, but Vaclav Hladky and Etienne Green both arrived.

Although Green was third-choice shot-stopper at the time of his arrival, many Clarets fans wondered whether he would be happy sitting on the sidelines, and whether Trafford was potentially on his way out of the club.

But he was retained in the end - and he has been one of the first names on the teamsheet for the Lancashire outfit this season - even though he didn't enjoy the most successful 2023/24 campaign.

Despite enduring some wobbly moments during his time at Turf Moor, Trafford is rated as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in the country, and has even been called up to the senior side in the past.

Newcastle United stance on James Trafford revealed

The Clarets are desperate to retain Trafford beyond the end of the January transfer window.

This is according to Caught Offside, who believes the Magpies have even identified an alternative target, in case they don't manage to get a deal over the line for the Clarets' shot-stopper.

And in potentially positive news for the Championship promotion-chasers, The Athletic are now reporting that Newcastle are likely to wait until the summer to revisit a deal for the player.

This could allow Scott Parker's side to keep their number-one stopper for the remainder of the campaign.

Newcastle will surely want Trafford to be their first-choice option, considering he has a high amount of potential.

With this in mind, they may want to wait until the summer to recruit him, before assessing him in pre-season to see whether he's ready to take a starting spot.

The Clarets should also benefit from having stability in their goalkeeping department for the remainder of the season, even though Hladky can step in.

And the player may find it difficult to make a mid-season move if it materialises.

With this in mind, Trafford staying put for the remainder of the season may benefit all parties involved.
