West Ham United have suffered a blow in their chase to sign Celtic striker Daniel Cummings in the January transfer window.
The Hammers have shown great interest in signing the 18-year-old striker throughout the month and made a bid in the region of £500,000 for him.
Celtic have rejected the opening bid from West Ham, but the Premier League outfit are planning to come up with another improved offer, according to Sky Sports.
Talks are ongoing between the two clubs at the moment.
Cummings, who has only a few months left on his current deal at Celtic Park, has already agreed terms on a pre-contract, but West Ham are pushing to sign him in this window.
The young striker has been simply outstanding for the Celtic B team this season, and he made his senior debut against Aston Villa in the Champions League on Wednesday.
West Ham are desperate to sign a new striker before Monday’s 11pm deadline.
Michail Antonio is out for the rest of the season with a broken leg after his horrific accident, while it is not clear when summer signing Niclas Fullkrug will return to action from injury problems.
Danny Ings, 32, remains an option from Graham Potter, but his move to West Ham from Aston Villa has not been productive.
Cummings is a fantastic young talent, but he should be seen as the one for the future. It appears that the Hammers are keen to land him, and they are ready to make another improved offer to secure his signature.
West Ham are also close to signing Evan Ferguson from Brighton. He will join on loan for the rest of the season, and has already passed his medical at the London club.
