In a recent report on Substack, journalist Simon Phillips stated that Chelsea are eyeing a move for Bayer 04 Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah. It is believed that the Blues are showing interest in bringing the German centre-back to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer this summer.

Tah’s Impressive Form In German Football This Season

The 29-year-old is having a solid campaign at the German club as he has put in a series of impressive displays for them in the Bundesliga. Tah has featured in 45 matches for the German club this season, finding the back of the net three times and securing one assist on all fronts.

The German talent has been a good performer on the defensive third of the pitch based on his average of 1.1 interceptions, 4.5 clearances and 2.5 long balls per game in the Bundesliga. He has even been excellent with his ball distribution after completing 93.3% of his attempted passes in the top tier of German football (stats via whoscored).

His current contract at the German club will run out at the end of this campaign which could open the door for the Blues to sign him on a free transfer this summer.

Should Chelsea Go For Tah?

Tah is a tidy passer of the ball and can sense the danger well to secure possession back for his side inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot.

Standing at 1.95, the German sensation can use his powerful frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League if Chelsea manage to sign him this summer.

Tah would add more bite and steel to Chelsea‘s defensive department. He is good enough to challenge for a regular first-team spot at Stamford Bridge in the coming seasons.

At 29, Tah would be a good signing for the West London club in the short-term. However, the Blues would have to be patient with him as he might need some time to settle into life in England. Still, he is on an expiring contract and could help Chelsea compete for some major honours over the next few years.
