Chelsea’s purchase of Strasbourg as their sister club has worked out well so far.

The Blues have been able to send players on loan there, and that’s already worked out incredibly well this season, particularly in the cases of Djordje Perovic and Andrey Santos, who have been brilliant for them.

We’ve also been able to sell on some of our less successful signings – stand up, Diego Moreira.

Then there’s the flow of players the other way – after looking good for the Alsatians, Mamadou Sarr was signed by the Blues in January to arrive this summer.

Premier League rivals keen on another BlueCo rising star

There is another dynamic which we will soon see played out however. What if there’s a Strasbourg player who does well who we don’t want to sign, who ends up at a Premier League rival?

That’s just what we may see this summer with Emanuel Emegha. The striker has had a great season with Strasbourg, and been linked to Chelsea rather vaguely in the last few weeks.

But now there are far more intense links connecting the Emegha with a £30m move to Crystal Palace. So what do Chelsea do here?

Chelsea face tough question over Emegha’s future

If a player is clearly not good enough for our first team, there’s no issue. But there’s something odd about a player who we’re interested in moving from our sister club to a league rival. Just imagine if he turns into a smash hit at Palace – our sporting structure would be left looking very silly.

Even worse, imaging replacing Palace with, say, Man City or Liverpool. Would we let a Strasbourg player go to a top team? Could we even stop it happening?

These situations are bound to crop up more often in the future, and we’re really curious to see how they are sorted out.
