Chelsea were a shambles in defence and offered nothing in attack
Chelsea were beaten 3-0 by Brighton on Friday night, coming away from the Amex Stadium with defeat for the second time in a week.
Kaoru Mitoma scored a wonderful opener and Yankuba Minteh then helped himself to a brace, and there was never any sign that Chelsea were ready to mount a comeback.
The Blues failed to register a single shot on target, making it more than two months since their last away win.
Here’s how Enzo Maresca’s side rated at the Amex Stadium...
Filip Jorgensen 4
Made back-to-back Premier League starts for the first time having been confirmed as No1, for now at least. Unlucky with ricochet for Brighton second but could he have done better with the first? Horrible kick almost gave Joao Pedro a fourth.
Malo Gusto 5
Preferred to Reece James at right-back and at times looked Chelsea’s liveliest threat.
Trevor Chalobah 3
Manner of Mitoma’s opener did not look great for the defender but Japanese’s touch was magnificent. Dragged out in build-up to the second.
Back to lead the defence after sitting out FA Cup loss. Block inadvertently sparked pinball in box for Brighton second. So weak in claiming a foul in build-up to fourth goal.
Struggled to get to grips with Minteh and was sold by winger’s dummy for his goal. Defending for third against same player was embarrassing.
Moises Caicedo 4
Ineffectual. Replacement moments after Brighton third delighted home crowd. Booked.
Enzo Fernandez 5
Saw would-be equaliser ruled out for clear push on Veltman before heading in.
Noni Madueke 6
Brought in to add a pacey threat to stale frontline and started brightly, but lasted only 20 minutes before hamstring injury struck.
Off-colour again, twice skewing well wide with the kind of openings on the edge of the box that he usually loves.

Pedro Neto 3
Switched to the left to accommodate Madueke’s return, then shuffled back to the right. Shot blocked when ball fell to him in glorious position.
Christopher Nkunku 3
Switched to a deeper role following Maresca’s insistence that he is not a “proper No9”. Linked nicely with Madueke early on, but no impact once winger went off.
Substitutes
Jadon Sancho (Madueke 21’) 4
No impact. Casual defending for third goal.
Reece James (Gusto 65’) 5
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Caicedo 65’) 5
Tyrique George (Neto 65’) 6
