Chelsea’s title charge is over before it ever began.
The Blues had the chance to go top when they faced Everton at the end of December, but they bottled it. No matter, they had easy games to follow to get back on track. But instead of dusting themselves down and getting back into gear, they’ve spun out.
Like a golfer trying too hard to make up for a bad shot, the Blues are spiralling now. They’ve gone from the chance to go top to 5 games without a win. Last night’s game against Bournemouth was a classic of the genre – dominate the first half, look ultra confident, fail to put chances away, come out sloppy in the second half, concede and crumble.
It was only thanks to a Reece James free kick that they avoided defeat at home. They weren’t creating anything from open play in that second half, and looked really shaken. This bad run has come at the worst time too – in a stretch of matches against teams we were hoping to brush aside in order to put ourselves in strong position to take a top 4 place to qualify for next year’s Champions League.
But suddenly even that looks in doubt.
A look at the odds on SpinBet online casino would tell you the same thing – Chelsea are still in with a great chance of making the top 4, let alone the top 5, which looks likely to be good enough for the top 5 this year (although we were saying the same thing a year ago and it proved not to be. But it’s gone from looking secure to looking like a battle until the last day.
Not only have we dropped points, the teams around us are looking strong. Nottingham Forest got a draw against league leading Liverpool last night to prove they’re not going anywhere. Man City and Man United looks to be getting into gear after a bad start to the season. Tottenham can still beat anyone on their day.
Bournemouth, Brighton, Aston Villa, Fulham… all of them are still in reach of the top 4 and have the quality to go on a run and make life very difficult for us. We still should have the depth and the quality to get the job done, but it is suddenly looking like a desperate battle to the final day rather than a cruise.
Still, that’s the excitement we all want from our league, right?
