Clubs in Spain and Germany “already talking” with Chelsea about deal for £25m winger

Our writer Simon Phillips has a really interesting exclusive on his Substack today all about Jadon Sancho.
The winger is in a bit of a sticky situation at Chelsea right now. He’s on loan from Manchester United, with a £25m obligation to buy at the end of the year. That looked a no-brainer at the start of the season, but along with the rest of the team his form has tailed off.
Given the number of wingers we’ll have on the books next season, that’s ramped up the rumours that we might consider breaking the agreed deal to sign him, and pay a penalty in the process. That’s a sure sign that things aren’t going well.

Well, Phillips has two sources who tell him there’s no chance we do that. One of them thinks we’ll just pay the money which gets us Sancho for just £25m, and then keep him around as a squad player next year.
The other source has a more interesting view – that we will buy Sancho and look to sell him on in the same summer. It sounds crazy, but it’s just the sort of thing we like to do in our new, player trading era.
Certainly it makes sense if the penalty fee for terminating the deal is large – it’s better to buy him for £25m and sell him for £20m than it would be to pay a £10m fee. And who knows, maybe we can get full price for him?
The source says that there are clubs in Spain and Germany interested, and that Chelsea are “already talking to clubs” with an interest in him.
As Phillips says, a lot now comes down to how he performs between now and the end of the season.
