Liverpool have received a timely boost ahead of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg game against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield, with Cody Gakpo returning to training.
The Dutch international (with 36 caps) was spotted back at the AXA Training Centre on Monday. He missed recent games for the Reds.
Gakpo was absent as Liverpool claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Paris last week, a match in which Arne Slot’s side were under intense pressure for large spells.
Even though PSG dominated the tie, Liverpool managed to secure a crucial away win, putting them in a strong position ahead of the return leg at Anfield.
The 25-year-old also sat out Liverpool’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Southampton at the weekend but is now in contention to feature on Tuesday night.
His return will be a welcome boost for Slot, who wants to maintain Liverpool’s push on multiple fronts this season.
Gakpo has been a crucial figure for the Reds, registering 16 goals and five assists in 38 appearances across all competitions. His versatility in the attacking third has provided Slot with tactical flexibility, and his return could add another dimension to the Liverpool forward line against the French champions.
With the Anfield crowd set to create another electrifying European night atmosphere, Liverpool will hope Gakpo can help them finish the job against a PSG side desperate to overturn the deficit.
Slot will provide further updates on Gakpo’s fitness at his pre-match press conference, but his presence in training is an encouraging sign for Liverpool fans.
Liverpool have a 100% record at home in the Champions League this season, while Slot is unbeaten against French clubs.
Liverpool have won seven consecutive matches across all competitions at Anfield, dropping points in only one home fixture all year (2-2 draw versus Manchester United).
The Reds are on course to secure a place in the last eight and will be counting on Gakpo and co. to deliver the goods.
