Cody Gakpo continued his excellent form for Liverpool by grabbing a brace in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
Dominik Szoboszlai got the title-chasing Reds off to a quick start at Anfield with an 11th-minute opener before Mo Salah scored his 100th Premier League goal at the famous ground with a typical brilliant finish.
Cody Gakpo provided the assist for his Egyptian teammate before getting in on the act himself, finding the net just before the interval. In the second half the Dutchman found the target again, meeting a perfect Trent Alexander-Arnold cross with his head.
Gakpo now has nine goal involvements in his last ten appearances in all competitions. “I really do love scoring here but the most important thing was the win today,” he told BBC Sport.
“Everyone knows [Alexander-Arnold’s] quality. I was eager to be on time in the box [to meet his cross].”
The result means Liverpool remain six points clear of rivals Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, and with a game in hand. But the forward is aware that the title race is not yet over.
“Obviously we grow as a team,” Gakpo continued. It’s one year more [from last season]. We have a different manager, a slightly different style of play – more possession based.
“Everyone is in good form but we have to keep going.”
He added: “We stay very focused. We are there every day on the training field to keep improving ourselves. There is a long way to go. Step by step.”
