Eddie Howe has been asked about the Miguel Almiron situation.
The United boss quizzed on the Paraguay international on the eve of Newcastle’s Premier League match against Bournemouth.
A departure has been talked about some time and now this January 2025 transfer window it looks set to happen.
Newcastle United having been in talks with a number of interested clubs and now The Mail (and others) reporting that a £10m deal is set to be sealed imminently, with Miguel Almiron returning to the MLS and former club Atlanta United.
It is the close season in America at the moment and the 2025 MLS season is set to kick-off in late February.
At his pre-Bournemouth press conference on Friday, Eddie Howe asked about Miguel Almiron.
Whilst admitting that “anything can happen” with a potential Miguel Almiron departure, Eddie Howe stated that the staff “expect him here for training today and to be part of the squad tomorrow” against Bournemouth.
Eddie Howe asked how Miguel Almiron has dealt with the situation:
“Top, top class.
“His playing persona is his personality.
“A brilliant professional.
“He lives his life through football.
“His training performances and personality have been consistent with his normal self.”
Eddie Howe asked about potentially not immediately replacing Miguel Almiron in this transfer window if he did leave:
“Not ideal.
“But I don’t think it would be ideal from anyone’s viewpoint.
“From our perspective, we don’t want to lose players, but we know the reality of PSR and our ongoing management of that.
“We are making decisions not based on football but making ones for the future.”
Eddie Howe on losing players in transfer windows, who he would rather keep, in order for Newcastle United to balance things and deal with PSR for the short and/or long-term:
“My first experience of this, was Elliot Anderson in the summer.
“It is a blow when you don’t have to lose a player football-wise, but do financially, I think this will happen again [in the future].
“If you can’t control it and know it is for benefit of the club, you can’t block it.
“For the future of the club you have to accept these decisions and take that pain.”
Meanwhile, Eddie Howe asked about Lloyd Kelly, with widespread media reports claiming that a derisory £6m bid from Fenerbahce has been turned down by Newcastle United:
