Magpies boss is the first English manager to deliver a major trophy for an English club for 17 years

An emotional Eddie Howe predicted that many of his Newcastle stars will make “legends” of themselves and urged fans and players to bask in the glory of winning their first major domestic trophy for 70 years.

Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley on Sunday afternoon to win the Carabao Cup, their first major domestic honour since 1955.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored the all-important goals for the Magpies, before Federico Chiesa netted a late consolation for Liverpool.

Howe became the first English manager to win a major trophy with an English club since Harry Redknapp, who used to manage Howe, led Portsmouth to FA Cup success in 2008.

Asked whether he urges players and fans to celebrate together, a teary Howe replied: “I think there has to be. I certainly will be encouraging it, which is very rare for me.

“We have to celebrate, hopefully with our supporters, with everyone that has waited so long.

“It is difficult because it’s international duty. We’ve got players who are going here, there and everywhere. We’re going to Dubai tomorrow, so there won’t be long to spend, but hopefully it will be very enjoyable.”

Of Newcastle’s performance, Howe said: “I thought we were magnificent today. I got drenched in alcohol by Joelinton and the rest of the squad. But that’s what it’s about. We’ll just try and enjoy the moment and take it all in.

“They’ve all had different journeys to get to this point. I love working with them every day. I’m honoured to be their leader. Since I’ve been at the football club, the support we’ve had at home and away has been incredible.

“It’s amazing what football can do. It’s one of the rare sports that has the ability to give people days they will never forget. I certainly won’t forget this day.”

Howe hopes that finally getting over the line can lead to more silverware for Newcastle in the years to come.

“Hopefully with one, there can be more, but it just proves we can do it,” he said. “We proved we can mix our game against the very best.

“I do think we’ve got some iconic players who will go down as legends for this football club. I always had the thought I just want to make my family proud.”

Emotional Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes said: “I don't have any words. It's the best day of my life. For them [the fans], it's like the World Cup. People have grown up and not seen us as champions.

“My first year as captain of this club and it's one of the best days. This is unbelievable. This is my second home.”
