Enzo Maresca has been taking his press conference ahead of Chelsea’s game against Manchester United tomorrow night, and he was once again asked about his team’s objectives for the season, and whether he felt he was going to reach them.

He must be so frustrated with this question – he’s been asked it all year long. At first it looked like he was going to far exceed expectations, but a slump since Christmas now means the question has a more negative slant on it.

He’s always maintained that finishing in the Champions League places would be a bonus, as he was told that was something he needed to achieve only within two years of being appointed. However, he did admit that the strong start his team made had shifted the goalposts a little.

Enzo Maresca on what would make a successful season for Chelsea

“Since day one, I said that the club told me in two years we want to play Champions League,” Maresca said.

“But when you are in the top four all season, it’s natural the target changes. What changed is that because we were there all season, the target automatically becomes top four or five. I think we have had a good season that will become a very good season if we can finish top five and win the Conference League.”

At this stage, a win in the Conference League and a top 5 place would certainly be satisfactory – but the fact we were so close to the top of the table in December will inevitably drain a little bit of the enthusiasm from celebrating that too much.

Maresca will be staying in place for next season, and that’s when we need to start seeing tangible progress from the team.
