Legendary Dutch midfielder Ruud Gullit feels that appointing Ruben Amorim in the middle of the season was a mistake on Manchester United’s part.

The Red Devils wielded the axe on Erik ten Hag’s tenure in October, and initially appointed his compatriot Ruud van Nistelrooy as a caretaker coach. However, the latter was only keeping the seat warm for the arrival of Amorim.

As for Gullit, this wasn’t the right call on the club’s part, as bringing in a new manager with new ideas could always spell trouble.

This iconic AC Milan star was asked to comment on the recent appointment of Robin van Persie as head coach at Feyenoord. The 62-year-old urged caution while offering the ominous example of Man Utd.

“You can see how coming on midway through the season could become a mistake like what happened with Ruben Amorim at Manchester United,” wrote the former Chelsea player-coach in his editorial for De Telegraaf. “Let’s hope the same thing doesn’t happen to Van Persie.”

Nevertheless, Gullit noted that things don’t always go awry when a club pulls of a mid-season managerial change, while pointing towards David Moyes who managed to lift Everton up from the drop zone following his return to Goodison Park.

“But it could also go well, if you notice how David Moyes has resuscitated Everton since his arrival and how they are almost out of relegation trouble.”

Therefore, it remains to be seen how Van Persie will fare in his new adventure in Rotterdam, as many fancy the return of the Netherlands star.

The former striker is considered a fan favourite amongst Man Utd supporters, as his exploits played a key role in the club’s path towards the 2012/13 EPL trophy, which remains their last league title to this day.

Curiously, Amorim himself would agree with the notion. Upon his arrival at Carrington, the 40-year-old admitted he would have preferred to see out the season at Sporting CP before taking over United in the summer, but he was told it was either ‘now or never’.
