Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has his say as Derby County plot a double transfer swoop for Danny Batth and Andi Weimann of Blackburn Rovers.
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has weighed in on Derby County's potential double swoop for Blackburn Rovers duo Andreas Weimann and Danny Batth.
As exclusively revealed by Football League World, John Eustace is keen on a reunion with both Batth and Weimann at Pride Park this summer, having signed both for Blackburn 12 months ago.
The experienced duo played a key role in what was a strong season for the Lancashire club, having escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth in 2023/24.
After finishing seventh and missing out on the play-offs by two points, Rovers boss Valerien Ismael offered new deals to Weimann and Batth, as he seems keen to have them at the club next season.
However, a reunion with former boss Eustace at Pride Park could be on the cards. Having poached their manager away last season, Derby could deal Blackburn another big blow in the transfer window.
Football League World exclusively spoke to former Sunderland striker turned Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman, gathering his thoughts on the potential double deal for Derby.
“I think the Derby County recruitment is going to be absolutely fascinating this summer," said Goodman.
“I know Andy Weimann and Danny Batth are two players that John Eustace knows well from his time at Blackburn Rovers.
“I guess really you’d have to ask yourself if you’re a Derby County fan, with respect to those two players who are well in their 30s, would they be signings that excite you?
“I’m not totally sure [if they are exciting signings], to be honest. Last year, Derby’s remit in the Championship, and they did it. If their remit is to survive in the Championship again next season, then they’d be decent signings.
“If their remit is to be progressing, then I’m not so sure about that."
Following his harsh sacking from Birmingham City in 2023, Eustace has more than proven why he's such a highly-rated manager at Championship level, thanks to his work with Blackburn and now Derby.
Last summer, despite losing star player Sammie Szmodics and barely keeping the Blue and Whites up, the 45-year-old revolutionised his side in the summer, and had them flirting with the play-offs.
Whilst he would ultimately depart Ewood Park in the middle of a play-off pursuit, it's undeniable what an incredible job that Eustace did to get Blackburn to where they were last season.
Now, the Rams will be hoping that their former midfielder could be the man to help them charge up the Championship table, and will certainly trust his transfer strategy based on the evidence displayed at his previous club.
The sentiment when both Batth and Weimann arrived last summer was similar to how Goodman feels about them currently, but they went on to be a key part of what was a very solid season for the Lancashire outfit.
Eustace is fantastic at building a squad which has the perfect balance of experience and youth. Whilst the signings of Batth and Weimann might not be the most exciting, evidence suggests they would be two very shrewd pickups for Derby.
