Saturday 31 May marks the seventh anniversary of City signing Lauren Hemp.

The skilful winger completed a transfer to the Joie Stadium on this day in 2018 and has since established herself as one of world football’s finest operators.

In total, she has made 173 appearances, our sixth-highest, and scored 68 goals meaning she’s only second to Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw in our all-time goalscorers chart.

Throughout her seven years at the Club, Hemp has provided many a memorable moment which will live long in the memories of those connected to City.

To celebrate her time here so far, we’ve selected five of her standout displays in sky blue…

CITY 3-0 WEST HAM | 4 MAY 2019

In what was her first term at the Club following her switch from Bristol City, Hemp wasted little time in making her mark at City – helping us to a League Cup and FA Cup double.

And it was in the latter’s showpiece at Wembley where she stamped her authority by rounding off the scoring in a strong 3-0 win over West Ham.

After a goalless first half, Keira Walsh broke the deadlock before Georgia Stanway doubled our advantage with just less than 10 minutes remaining.

Hemp then came to the fore, beating Hammers goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse to an aerial ball from Jen Beattie to perfectly rubber-stamp an impressive debut season at City.

CITY 1-0 READING | 27 MARCH 2021

After suffering an injury at the beginning of the 2020/21 campaign, Hemp returned in the new year and played an influential role in City winning 12 successive Barclays Women’s Super League matches.

Across that phenomenal period, she scored eight goals in nine games and as part of that superb sequence the winger provided a memorable assist in a dramatic late victory over Reading at the Joie Stadium.

With the scores locked at 0-0 entering the closing stages, the likelihood of a drew grew before Hemp produced a spectacular solo run, slaloming up the pitch and through Royals bodies before squaring for Chloe Kelly who tucked home from close range.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-3 CITY | 19 NOVEMBER 2023

City travelled to Manchester United in November 2023 looking to become the first away team to win at Old Trafford in the WSL.

And thanks to an all-round fantastic display by Gareth Taylor’s team, we did just that with Hemp at the heart of a 3-1 victory.

Katie Zelem handed the hosts the lead from the penalty spot before Jill Roord equalised in the 34th minute and it didn’t take Hemp long to hand the Blues the lead on enemy territory.

Bunny Shaw teed up the winger who unleashed a vicious, dipping first-time effort into the top corner to provide a moment of pure euphoria for the sky-blue faithful.

It was just rewards for her display at Old Trafford and Bunny rounded off the scoring shortly after half-time.

CITY 2-0 LEICESTER | 4 FEBRUARY 2024

Hemp showcased her wonderful talent when providing the spark in a precious win over Leicester at the Joie Stadium with City relentlessly pursuing the WSL title.

The Blues had created plenty of opportunities against the Foxes but were often thwarted by heroic rearguard action which meant the scoreline was goalless entering the closing stages.

That was until Hemp met a Bunny cross with a remarkable scorpion kick from close range to hand us a deserved lead which also further exemplified her ability to drag City over the line in a time of need.

We then pushed on and doubled our lead when Kelly’s corner found the back of the net.

CITY 4-0 SPURS | 8 NOVEMBER 2024

Hemp took centre stage when City played our first of three matches at the Etihad Stadium in 2024/25.

In an emphatic 4-0 win over Spurs, the England international provided three assists as we extended our winning streak in all competitions to nine matches.

After Bunny had broken the deadlock inside the first minute, Hemp produced a pinpoint cross from the left for the Jamaican to head home from close range.

Our winger then skipped through a crowd of Spurs bodies in the second half before teeing up Roord who took a touch and slammed into the net for our third of the evening.

And Hemp was the architect of the fourth when she drove past her opposite number on the left and drilled low across the box for Shaw to tuck home for her hat-trick.
