Thomas Tuchel will name his first England squad next month as the Three Lions begin 2026 World Cup qualification.
The German officially began his reign in January and has been a keen observer of English talent in the Premier League and further afield since. Ahead of his first squad announcement, could we see new faces introduced into the fold?
We’ve looked at five uncapped players Tuchel will be watching closely.
Tuchel is understood to be considering a first call-up for Arsenal teenager Lewis-Skelly. The 18-year-old has made 20 appearances in all competitions this season and kept summer signing Riccardo Calafiori out of the side in recent weeks.
Lewis-Skelly has excelled at left-back, where his confident ball-carrying and press resistance have shone. Given England’s problems at left-back with Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell struggling for fitness and favour, Lewis-Skelly could stake a claim for involvement in March.
There appears a shortage of natural successors to Harry Kane with England but Liam Delap has elevated himself into the conversation this season. Since signing for Ipswich from Manchester City, Delap has been a bright spark in a tough season for The Tractor Boys.
He has scored nine goals in 22 league starts for Kieran McKenna’s team in a coming-of-age campaign in the Premier League. Delap is thriving amid regular first-team football and has the raw ingredients to step up to the senior England squad.
A menace to backlines with his strength, speed and powerful running, he has already been backed for a big-money move to a top side in the summer.
Another of Arsenal’s Hale End graduates, Ethan Nwaneri appears a star in the making. Nwaneri became the top-flight’s youngest-ever player when making his Arsenal debut at 15 and this season has earned regular involvement with the Gunners.
The midfielder has scored seven goals in 23 games for Arsenal, despite not turning 18 until next month. He would love to celebrate that milestone with a maiden England call-up, with the Three Lions set to take on Albania on Nwaneri’s birthday. The teenager boasts a brilliant record at youth level, with 21 goals in 36 games for the u-17 and u-19 teams.
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens chose to depart English football to broaden his horizons in Europe. The winger left Manchester City to follow the path Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham trod at Borussia Dortmund, where he has evolved into one of the Bundesliga’s brightest talents.
The 20-year-old has scored 11 goals in all competitions and leads the Bundesliga for progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90 minutes in 2024/25.
England are not short of talent in the wide areas, but with several senior stars missing or out of form, he could be handed an audition for a regular role.
Djed Spence had become a forgotten man at Tottenham. The right-back’s time in North London had been a disaster until this season, having failed to make a league start since arriving in 2022.
After a succession of loan spells and an injury crisis in Ange Postecoglou’s squad, Spence was brought back into the fold and hasn’t looked back. He’s been a positive performer in an otherwise sorry season for Spurs, impressing in both full-back positions and further forward when required. He ranks in the 96th percentile of full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for successful take-ons per game this season.
