The Football Association have outlined their stance following ‘classless’ chants aimed at Phil Foden and his mother by Manchester United fans on Sunday afternoon.
The two Manchester rivals played out a largely dull and drab 0-0 draw in Premier League action at the weekend leaving them in their respective positions in the bottom and top half of the top-flight table.
Such was the uneventful nature of matters on the pitch that much of the post-match conversation centred around the distasteful nature of chants from the stands, and rightly so given the sensitive nature of their subject.
Audible chanting from large sections of Manchester United supporters were directed towards Phil Foden and his mother, with Pep Guardiola commenting strongly on the matter during his post-match media conference.
“Lack of class. But it’s not (Manchester) United, it’s the people, you know? We are so exposed in the screen in world football – managers, owners, and football players especially,” Guardiola told reporters after the contest.
The Manchester City manager continued, “Honestly, I don’t understand the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil, it’s a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed.”
Now, according to the information of MailSport’s Chris Wheeler, while the Football Association are ‘aware’ of the chants concerning Foden’s mother by Manchester United fans at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon and ‘condemn’ them.
However, it is stated that the FA will not take any action on the matter as they ‘do not breach regulations’.
Phil Foden himself is yet to comment on the matter and will no doubt remain focussed on the task at hand for Manchester City when they return to Premier League action on Saturday lunchtime with a meeting at home against Crystal Palace.
The Stockport-born playmaker was spotted responding to Manchester United fans during the Old Trafford contest on Sunday upon hearing the chanting about his mother, sarcastically giving them a thumbs up from the playing surface and asking them to chant louder.
It remains to be seen whether the lack of action taken by the Football Association will be put to manager Pep Guardiola when he next faces the media, with his pre-Crystal Palace press conference due on Friday afternoon.
