After becoming the first side in Premier League history to score within the first minute on three consecutive occasions, kick-off masters Brentford took a relatively long time to open the scoring against Wolves - it wasn’t until 75 seconds when the Bees opened the scoring! Nathan Collins (£4.5m) headed home to give Brentford the lead, a player we’ve previously highlighted for his goal threat.
The Irish international quickly added an assist when, once again, Bryan Mbeumo (£7.5m) made it 2-1, this time from the penalty spot. This was the midfielder’s sixth goal in seven matches and it reinforced his inclusion in the template FPL squad.
Strikes from Christian Nørgaard (£4.8m) and Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) made it hard to keep up with a frantic first half. Like Collins, centre-back partner Pinnock ranks amongst the best defenders so far for attempts inside the box, headed chances and shots on target.
Managers who took a punt on Fábio Carvalho (£4.8m) as their cheap fifth midfielder will have been disappointed to see him benched, but the late 13-minute cameo still brought a goal.
It was midfield playmaker Damsgaard, who was named Player of the Match and part of the Premier League’s Team of the Week.
The 24-year-old assisted Collins and Pinnock as part of the six chances he created. This takes his total up to 12 chances created this season; of these 12 chances, three have been big chances, which is only bettered by Mbeumo at the club.
Only 12,000 of 10.5 million FPL managers (0.1%) have the Dane in their squads, but he’s an intriguing differential for those who like more maverick options to be their cheap midfielder.
Before last time’s 5-3 thriller with Wolves, the sole occasion where the Bees scored four first-half Premier League goals was August 2022’s clash with Manchester United - their opponents for Gameweek 8.
It’s a trip that could bring more goals for the Bees: only Southampton have scored fewer goals (five) than Erik ten Hag's side and the Red Devils’ last two home games both ended in a 3-0 defeat.
Elsewhere in the FPL world, Michail Antonio (£5.4m) was the weekend’s top scorer with 18 points. He delivered a goal, three assists and three bonus points during his 69 minutes versus Ipswich.
Bukayo Saka (£10.1m) made amends for his Gameweek 6 blank by bringing in a score of 16 at home to Southampton, while last season’s best goalkeeper Jordan Pickford (£4.8m) grabbed his first clean sheet of this campaign and added a penalty save.
Brentford’s very own Mbeumo is currently the most-bought player during the October international break. He’s already risen in price five times over recent weeks but a further 216,000 have transferred him in since the Gameweek 7 deadline passed.
Mbeumo edges ahead of Saka for purchases, with the Gunners winger about to be overtaken by in-form Brennan Johnson (£6.6m) and Dwight McNeil (£5.7m) after limping out of England’s defeat to Greece.
As for sales, the explosive start of Luis Díaz (£8.0m) has faded with no goal involvement at Wolves and a benching at Crystal Palace. Over 220,000 have sold the Liverpool attacker.
Saka is a slight doubt for Arsenal’s evening at Bournemouth and fellow heavyweights Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) and Cole Palmer (£10.8m) face each other at Anfield.
Therefore, despite frustrating recent captaincy blanks, Erling Haaland (£15.4m) again stands out as the leading candidate.
No player has more points (67), goals (10), attempts (35) or shots on target (23) and he’ll get a go at last-placed Wolves.
