'Great' midfielder too FLASH for Liverpool says Simon Jordan | OneFootball

With the potential departures of Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, transfer rumours have been rife around Liverpool so far this season.

The talk stems from, in large part, Liverpool not being incredibly active in the transfer market either. Only Federico Chiesa was brought in during the summer transfer window.

There is a clear preference to keep, re-sign and develop talent rather than just throw money around and see what works at Liverpool.

And speaking recently on his Up Front podcast, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has voiced this sentiment.

In discussing Tottenham midfielder James Maddison, Jordan said, “Maddison, I think he’s a great player, but he’s a bit flash for cash, I think he’s a great Tottenham player, but I don’t see Liverpool buying Maddison.

"I wouldn’t see Arsenal buying Maddison and I wouldn’t see Man City buying Maddison,” Jordan continued, “but I see Spurs buying him. Spurs have always had players with great quality, but we’re talking about culture."

The type of player Liverpool sign

Jordan’s comments regarding club culture and “flash” players when it comes to the type of characters that Liverpool sign are interesting.

It’s something that is worth keeping in mind when transfer rumours are as rife as they are around Liverpool at the minute.

'Flash' is an ill-defined descriptor but it does broadly hold true when you track Liverpool’s recent transfer history.

Federico Chiesa, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo are the players signed since the start of last summer’s transfer window.

Whilst they have different playing styles there is a similarity in their on-pitch nature - diligent, known for holding their position, and agreeable personalities. There isn’t a particularly spiky character in any of them.

The highest-profile signing of recent times that has shown significant on-pitch emotion is Darwin Nuñez, who is also lining up to potentially be the biggest transfer ‘miss’ Liverpool had in the Jurgen Klopp era.

As a result, it is worth keeping in mind the personalities of the players Liverpool are linked to this season - especially considering the type of characters they would be replacing.
