Pep Guardiola has insisted Manchester City will be ‘careful’ with Rodri despite the midfielder’s return to training.
Rodri has not featured since sustaining an ACL injury against Arsenal in September. The Spaniard’s season was decimated by the issue, with City enduring a decline in the absence of the Ballon d’Or winner. The Citizens have received a huge boost with Rodri returning to training but Guardiola has said caution will be taken with the midfielder.
Speaking ahead of Friday’s fixture with Wolves in the Premier League, Guardiola said it would be the doctor’s call on when the 28-year-old returns to the pitch.
“We are really pleased that Erling is back and that Rodri is back in the training sessions. The moment the official doctor says Rodri can start to play minutes – after that he will start to play minutes, but the doctors have to tell me.
“It was a difficult injury. It was an injury seven to 11 months, the doctor said. Every day Rodri is making more sessions but we have to wait so he doesn’t make a step backwards and get injured again so we have to be careful.
“Every training session he feels better and when the doctor says Rodri is stable and can start to play – after that he is going to come back.
“The most important thing is Wolves. I have to select the best players to play against Wolves. This is the only concern I have. When the doctor tells me he can do it, I will start to think about it.”
