Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes he knows why Kobbie Mainoo hasn’t immediately won over the backing for Ruben Amorim.
The 19-year-old was a regular feature for the Red Devils over the past year or so after cementing himself as a key player in Erik ten Hag’s system despite his tender age. However, the teenager has seen less playing time in the first few months of Amorim’s reign.
With Manuel Ugarte suspended against Newcastle United, the Portuguese manager even opted to start with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, keeping Mainoo on the bench, although he regretted the decision and introduced the young Englishman for Joshua Zirkzee in the middle of the first half which caused an infamous incident at Old Trafford.
But while the England international returned to the starting lineup against Liverpool, this was arguably down to the lack of option, as many believe that the young man isn’t exactly Amorim’s cup of tea.
According to Scholes, Mainoo’s physical condition could be the reason behind the manager’s reluctance to deploy him, as he’s often seen flagging in the second half.
“Mainoo with his legs has to be a worry. He doesn’t finish a lot of games,” said the Man Utd icon during his appearance on the Premier League Productions (via the Sun).

Michael Owen also agreed with the statement made by his former teammate, while noting that Mainoo remains an unbelievable player.
“He looks heavy, but yeah, he tires a lot, doesn’t he?” said the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker.
“And it’s one thing he’s an unbelievable player, but if there’s one thing about Mainoo, it’s getting around the pitch and his ability to last a full game at the high intensity that’s needed.
“And then you look at the other alternatives. You’ve got [Christian] Eriksen that’s getting on in years. Casemiro that’s never been that mobile but getting on in years.
“So, I guess you’re left with [Manuel] Ugarte and another. You’re left with Ugarte.”
Mainoo is also facing an uncertain future at Man Utd as the hierarchy is struggling to renew his contract, sparking links with Chelsea.
