FLW's Blackburn Rovers fan pundit has given his verdict on Gary O'Neil's potential appointment
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Gary O’Neil has emerged as a potential candidate to replace John Eustace as manager at Blackburn Rovers.
According to Alan Nixon, the former Wolves boss is on the shortlist of options to take charge of the Lancashire outfit.
It has been reported by Rob Dorsett that Eustace is set to sign on the dotted line for a switch to Derby County, leaving Blackburn without a manager.
O’Neil is currently available as a free agent after leaving Wolves earlier this season, with the likes of Aitor Karanka and Carlos Carvahal also mentioned as possible appointments as overseas options are also considered.
When asked about O’Neil’s potential appointment, FLW’s Blackburn fan pundit Simon Middlehurst suggested that it would be a great idea, especially at this business end of the campaign.
He believes the 41-year-old would bring the right level of experience to the club, also naming Rob Edwards as a strong alternative if the pursuit of O’Neil doesn’t lead to his arrival.
“Gary O’Neil I think would be a great option,” Middlehurst told Football League World.
“He’s got experience in England and also having experience in the Championship and the Premier League.
“I think that would be a fantastic shout going forward.
“Especially, at this stage of the season, going into the business end, we’ve got 15 games left.
“I think that would be a great option if they were going to go down that route.
“For me, personally, I think Rob Edwards as well.
“I think he would be [a good appointment], just after leaving Luton.
“[He’s] not had a great season with Luton but, again, another manager who has got Championship experience and knows what it takes to take a team up as well.
“Gary O’Neil and Rob Edwards, for me, would be a great shout.”
O’Neil has managed both Bournemouth and Wolves in the Premier League and has done an okay job on both occasions, without pulling up any major trees.
That was in the Premier League though, so his potential appointment in the Championship would be a big statement from Blackburn, and a positive sign of their ambition.
Rovers have to respond with that kind of replacement for Eustace, with two managers in a row now departing over a lack of backing from the owners.
