How Chelsea could get special discount on Arsenal reject this summer | OneFootball

Football scout Mick Brown has been having his say on Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation, and he reckons the Blues could be ready to move for an experienced Premier League option this season, despite having signed multiple stoppers over the last few years.

“Chelsea are assessing their options in the transfer market,” he told Football Insider.

“One of those options, I’m told, is Aaron Ramsdale. But from what I hear, Chelsea feel he would be an upgrade on the options they’ve already got. Ramsdale is an England international and has been pretty highly rated throughout his career.

“He doesn’t want to play in the Championship, so if and when Southampton go down, and Chelsea come calling, he’ll want to make that move.”

Ramsdale was considered a top stopper for a while before his star fades at Arsenal.

We know that Chelsea are saying they’re happy with their options in goal. But to us, that feels more like a smokescreen than anything. They should always be looking to upgrade given how important a position it is, and if a unique opportunity comes along, they should look to take it.

Southampton’s impending relegation should provide that opportunity. Even if there is no specific relegation clause in his deal with the Saints – and we strongly suspect there would be given he came from Arsenal and was really dropping down a level to go to a team heavily favoured to go down right from the start – we should still be able to get a discount on him.

The question of whether we want to upgrade by buying a goalie our rivals for the top 4 discarded for not being good enough is a different story.
