Wrexham AFC are keen on Nottingham Forest's Lewis O'Brien following their promotion to the Championship.
Wrexham are expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer as they prepare for life in the Championship.
The Red Dragons have enjoyed a remarkable rise since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the club, which includes making history as they recorded three promotions on the bounce.
Now, attention turns to competing in the Championship next season, with Phil Parkinson and the recruitment team sure to be targeting quality players to improve the squad.
And, as exclusively revealed by FLW, Lewis O’Brien is a target for the Welsh side, with the midfielder set for an uncertain summer.
The 26-year-old is contracted to Nottingham Forest, but he is out of the picture at the City Ground, so he has spent the past few seasons out on loan at various clubs, which includes, most recently, a stint at Swansea City.
O’Brien was impressive during his time with the Swans, even though he only played 16 times from January, and that has put him on the radar of other clubs ahead of the summer window.
Given his pedigree, which also includes starring for Huddersfield in the Championship, it’s fair to say that bringing in O’Brien would be a statement signing for Wrexham.
Clearly, they are going to have to push the boat out financially following promotion, and whilst O’Brien would add a lot to the team on the pitch, he would come at a decent cost.
In terms of a transfer fee, a club-record fee would be required, but the fact the midfielder is out of contract with Forest in 12 months means he may be in their price range.
But, wages may be an issue, as Capology estimates that O’Brien earns £35,000 a week, which would comfortably put him above any other Wrexham player.
Again, we must stress that these figures are only estimates, but it’s worth noting that O’Brien joined Forest following their promotion to the Premier League, so he will have been offered a top-flight financial package.
That will be a factor when it comes to discussions, and it could influence the deal that Wrexham make with Forest for the player.
With Parkinson’s side having already been linked with Tom Cairney, it appears they are willing to break their wage structure once again - and it may be necessary if they are to kick-on in the Championship.
A big summer awaits for Wrexham, and if they can pull off a deal for O’Brien it will show the ambition of the club, as he could quickly become a key figure for the club.
