Kai Havertz is set to miss the rest of the season after tearing his hamstring during Arsenal’s warm weather training camp in Dubai.

Havertz sustained the issue this week and Arsenal have now discovered the extent of the injury. A decision will be made on whether the German international requires surgery, though The Athletic have confirmed Havertz will miss the remainder of the campaign.

It is a huge blow to Arsenal, who were interested in signing a striker in January to provide competition and cover for the 25-year-old.

Arsenal currently have Gabriel Jesus (ACL) and Bukayo Saka (hamstring) sidelined and are short of depth in attacking areas. Gabriel Martinelli also joined the absentee list after picking up a hamstring issue earlier this month. The Brazilian is facing around a month out.

Arsenal now face the challenge of replacing Havertz, who has 15 goals and five assists in 34 appearances across all competitions this season. Leandro Trossard and Ethan Nwaneri are the likeliest options to deputise in an unfamiliar centre-forward role.

In December, Arteta stated his belief that 17-year-old Nwaneri could develop into a number nine.

“I think he can develop into a number nine. He has got the goal in front of him and he looks at the goal and he has a tremendous ability to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Arsenal failed with a bid to sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa in January. Following the closure of the transfer window, Arteta admitted he was disappointed with the failure to sign a striker. The Gunners will enter the market for a centre-forward in the summer window, with Benjamin Sesko a long-standing target.
