Despite enjoying a key role in Wrexham’s history-making success that has most recently seen the Welsh side promoted to the Championship, Paul Mullin is more likely to exit the club this summer than stay.

Playing time has been much scarcer for the striker this term, starting only nine league games for the Red Dragons.

On the whole, Mullin will be remembered as a certified club legend at the Racecourse Ground, but it appears to be the end of a hugely successful chapter in the forward’s career.

However, the culmination of one story brings forward an opportunity for the next. Countless clubs are sure to be vying for Mullin’s signature in the summer transfer window, eager for the goalscoring threat and invaluable experience he can bring to a side.

The striker has netted 110 times in 172 Wrexham appearances, an enviable goalscoring record that will be sure to attract many potential suitors.

Whilst not being linked to the club - yet anyway - Wigan Athletic could potentially be an ideal destination for Mullin next season if he is on the move.

Very local to his home city of Liverpool, Wigan will be looking to climb up the table under Ryan Lowe in 2025-26, with the current Latics boss being a goalscoring striker back in his playing days, just like Mullin has proven to be.

Lacking striking options going into next season, Wigan should really be considering being in the race for Mullin, but FLW's Latics fan pundit, Corey Bissell, isn't as convinced.

“I've considered this a lot because we're at the end of the season now - you start thinking about targets who haven't had game time and who you could pick up, and who has succeeded in lower leagues and all that sort of thing," Corey told FLW.

“You start thinking, what are our options looking like? The striker position is somewhere where we definitely need to strengthen, so it's something I've been considering a lot.

“Paul Mullin was one that I had on my radar that could work with him not picking up that much game time and Wrexham going up.

“I'm unsure, if I'm honest. He is undoubtedly a goalscorer. I'm just hesitant as to whether he suits the system and whether he has the legs to play Ryan Lowe’s way.

“I'm not saying he doesn't, but I'm not sold.

"There are targets for me that would be ahead of Paul Mullin on our striker list, but he would still potentially be a good option. I just think there are fewer risky options that could be taken.

Paul Mullin had tough 2024-25 season at Wrexham, but Wigan Athletic could be his perfect platform

Overall, Wigan steadied the ship throughout an unsure year in League One, which saw Shaun Maloney dismissed in March and Ryan Lowe appointed in his place.

Lowe had been out of work since August after departing from Preston North End after one solitary game at the beginning of the season – a 2-0 home defeat to Sheffield United.

Ultimately finishing 15th in the third-tier, one thing was made clear at the end of the campaign – Wigan desperately need goals.

The Latics’ goalscoring record throughout the season was poor to say the least. In fact, they scored the fewest goals in the entirety of the division, netting just 40 times across the 46 league games.

As a result, Mullin could inject some firepower into an attack that has been sorely lacking. Just last season, the striker bagged 24 goals in 38 League Two appearances, highlighting his goalscoring prowess in the EFL, although he has not done it at League One level in his career, which could be a worry.
