Paul Warne reportedly could be in line for a return to Rotherham United amid growing pressure on Steve Evans.
According to Alan Nixon, the 51-year-old is under consideration by the Millers to take charge of the first team squad, should a change in manager be made.
Warne is currently available following his dismissal from Derby County earlier this month, having helped the Rams gain promotion last season.
Warne departed Rotherham to join Derby in September 2022, leaving the club right after bringing them back to the Championship with a second place finish in League One.
When asked about Warne returning to the club, FLW’s Rotherham fan pundit Tom Eyre claimed that it’s not something he wants to see.
He has suggested that sticking with Evans for the time being is the right move, although he admitted that the 62-year-old.
“I think it’s a really interesting point, the Paul Warne angle,” Eyre told Football League World.
“I think, if Evans were to go, I don’t think Warne would be the man to set on to Rotherham.
“I think sometimes it’s good to leave things in the past.
“I don’t think him and the chairman had a brilliant relationship, so I don’t think he’d come back under those circumstances.
“So, I would persist with Evans on the basis he’s made new signings and you’ve got to follow through.
“However, I do think he is underachieving, and I do think his job is in jeopardy, and the news [about] Paul Warne has further implicated that he is, indeed, under pressure from the chairman.”
Rotherham are currently 14th in the League One table, having failed to win any of their last four league games, sitting 12 points adrift of the play-off places.
Evans has to turn things around quickly, or else his position with Rotherham will not last much longer.
Reports of Warne coming back offer a warning sign, and he is someone with the credentials to turn things around.
The manner of his exit means supporters might not welcome him with open arms despite the success he enjoyed during his first stint.
But he could still prove a smart appointment given that success, and it might be the best that Rotherham could get right now.
