Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez has finally found his scoring touch at just the right time with his goal against Cagliari.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
There was a palpable feeling of relief after Martinez scored Inter’s second goal yesterday.
The Nerazzurri captain had gone nearly two months without scoring for the Nerazzurri.
Even by the at-times streaky Argentine’s standards, that was a worrying dry spell.
But Cagliari have always been a team that Martinez seems to put his shooting boots on for. And so it proved yesterday.
Martinez had one glaring miss in the first half of yesterday’s match.
That led to the worry that there really is a mental block for the 27-year-old. In the last few matches, he has not been without chances but hasn’t taken any.
But Martinez’s goal showed that he has overcome that.
It was not the most impressive goal the Argentine will ever score. But he did very well to keep himself onside from a Nicolo Barella cross, and then his finish left little to complain about.
Inter will be hoping that this unlocks Martinez.
At his best, the Nerazzurri captain is a striker who is relentless in scoring both easy goals and difficult ones.
Inter may feel that now is the portion of the season where they really need that prolific form from their captain.
In November and December Inter have coped fine without it. The rest of the squad has chipped in with goals.
But with the Supercoppa Italiana next week, followed by a real pile-up of Serie A, Champions League, and Coppa Italia fixtures on the way, a single reliable source of goals could be crucial.
