Chelsea go into their two games this week as short in attack as they have been all season.

Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson are out up top, and Noni Madueke’s injury has meant he joins the suspended Mykhailo Mudryk on the side-lines.

When it was just the strikers out, a piece by Kieran Gill explained what Madueke and the other wingers were doing to try and improve their scoring rate:

“[The wingers] are working on improving their output, not only inside of Cobham but outside. For example, Noni Madueke has been training with an external skills coach in a bid to boost his consistency, repeating drills which involve the left-footer driving in from the right-hand side,” the piece explained.

Sadly, Madueke was injured in the next game to follow. But the overall message from that piece that the wingers need to help out more has certainly resonated – Pedro Neto has started playing up front and doing really well:

“Now is the time for others to step up at Chelsea, not least those who are supposed to be contributing from the wings. It is not the easiest task for Pedro Neto, Jadon Sancho and Co, with Maresca so averse to high and wide full backs that Ben Chilwell was blacklisted. He prefers them inverting into midfield, and that can leave his winger with more than one opponent to beat on his own.”

Chelsea’s games against weaker opposition give Blues attackers another big chance to shine

With their next 3 games against weaker teams, Chelsea’s wingers should all be looking to get on the scoresheet to help their side get the goals they need. With Madueke out and Neto having stepped up, the onus is now on Jadon Sancho to do his part.
