The experienced forward has enjoyed a fine season as the Owls recorded their highest league finish in six years, finishing 12th in Danny Rohl's first full season in charge, although controversy and uncertainty has never been too far away from S6 at various points in the Championship campaign.

Windass' predicament in the Steel City has been a hot topic of discussion for plenty of time, with the Hull-born attacker signing a contract extension for this term last July.

However, with interest from Brazilian giants Santos surfacing in January, it is unsurprising that Wednesday are looking to tie down their top scorer for a lengthy period, although he has stated that all is likely to come out in the wash in the coming weeks after becoming the club's top scorer this century with his 53rd goal for the club coming on the final day against Watford at Vicarage Road.

Since initially joining on loan and subsequently for an undisclosed fee from Wigan Athletic in 2020, Windass has become part of an established and experienced core of players in S6, despite Wednesday's fluctuating fortunes in the Championship and League One.

The 31-year-old will mainly be remembered at Hillsborough for his last-gasp winner against Barnsley in the third-tier play-off final two years ago, his double in the FA Cup against Newcastle United and a remarkable 60+ yard strike against Derby County on New Year's Day.

But, with the Sheffield Star revealing that Rohl - whose own future is yet to be clarified - is set to commence contract talks with a plethora of Wednesday's squad, Windass didn't give much away in Hertfordshire, with the publication also stating that the ins and outs of an extension clause within his current deal are unknown at present as the attacker hinted towards another 'documentary' on his influence at the club.

“I don’t want to touch too much on that situation at the minute, I just want to enjoy the goal I’ve scored. I’ve really enjoyed my time here so I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the summer," he said. "The games we’ve had, the moments I’ve had at this club. Obviously there’s been a couple of bad ones every now and then, but in terms of wearing the Sheffield Wednesday shirt, it was always a huge, huge honour.”

“I’m sure all will be revealed on there,” Windass claimed. “I’ve been here five years and I’ve had an amazing time. I’ve been talking with the club since November (over a new contract), so we’ll see.”

Hillsborough faithful will hope Josh Windass remains a Wednesdayite next season

The connection which has been built between Wednesday supporters and Windass throughout his spell has been laid bare for all to see, and the fact he has remained in talks for over six months regarding fresh terms only proves that.

His father, Dean, recently stated that the 1-1 draw against Portsmouth on April 26th was the "final game at Hillsborough for Josh," although such revelations don't look as certain for the time being.

However, if Wednesday are to keep moving forward as a club - despite off-field controversy relating to Dejphon Chansiri's running of the club amid links of a potential takeover involving Moroccan businessman, Anis Sefrioui - it is imperative that some of those who have become part of the fabric remain a part of it, at least in the short-term.

Windass has shown no signs of slowing down either, with his goal output this term being his best at Championship level, and he would look to build on that next season with the hope that stability can mix with as equally as an enjoyable campaign on a personal level.
