Mbappé, for his part, made the trip to the Swedish capital of Stockholm last week.

The trip was authorised by his club and country, amid the 25-year-old’s ongoing efforts to fully recover from a recent spell on the sidelines.

With Mbappé having since travelled back to base in Madrid, however, reports stemming from the Swedish press have linked the Frenchman with an alleged sexual assault.

The assault in question is understood to have taken place at the same hotel in which Mbappé and a group of friends stayed between the 9th and 11th of October.

Aftonbladet, a Swedish outlet regarded as altogether reliable, were first to report the news, albeit without naming the Real Madrid star as a suspect.

From here, though, Expressen (as cited by the Daily Mail) directly linked Mbappé with the case, going as far as to name the former Paris Saint-Germain man as a suspect.

Mbappé, for his part, wasted little time in responding to as much, taking to his social media platforms to assure that the stories circulating about him were ‘fake news’.

And yet, a day on, the case rumbles on…

Speaking in quotes gathered by outlet TT, and relaid by Mundo Deportivo, on Tuesday, Marina Chirakova, chief prosecutor, provided the following statement on the matter:

“The only thing I can say is that a crime has been reported. I am leading the investigation, I can confirm that. It is said that the crime was committed on October 10 in the center of Stockholm. I will not say anything more at this time.”

Former chief prosecutor and president of the Centre for Victims of Crime, Sven-Erik Alhem, has since added that Mbappé will be questioned on the case, a development which should be considered ‘very important’.

In the Swedish press, meanwhile, they continue to point towards the France international as ‘reasonably suspected’ of sexual assault.

Further updates are expected over the coming 24 hours.
