The Whites fell behind after an early onslaught from Chris Wilder's side, who could have moved top of the Championship themselves with a win.

An effort from Tyrese Joseph came back off the post, but Illan Meslier palmed the ball over his own line in a vain attempt to keep the ball out, handing the hosts the lead.

But Sheffield United could not capitalise further on their early superiority, and Leeds always threatened to come back into the game with their quality across the pitch, testing Cooper in the Blades goal on several occasions.

16 minutes from time, they finally beat him as Junior Firpo arrived late to nod home a Daniel James cross, and as both sides pushed for a winner a set piece proved vital as Tanaka found himself free at the back post to head in what he thought to be the winning goal minutes from fulltime.

Two minutes later, Joel Piroe ensured that all three points went back to Leeds with a left-footed rocket from the edge of the penalty area, stretching his side's advantage to a massive five points at the top of the Championship.

Can anything stop them playing Premier League football next season?
