Liverpool Could Revive Long-Standing Interest in Real Madrid Star

The potential union of Rodrygo and Liverpool has lingered in transfer gossip circles for years. Now, as Real Madrid’s Brazilian star reflects on his uncertain future in Spain, the Merseyside club may be presented with a rare opportunity — one that could signal a new phase in Arne Slot’s Liverpool rebuild.
GIVEMESPORT have reported that “Real Madrid star Rodrygo could be within reach for Liverpool if boss Arne Slot and influential decision-makers are bold enough to make a move to lure him to Anfield.”
It would be a bold move indeed — not only because of the £850 million release clause in Rodrygo’s contract, but also because of what it would symbolise: a changing of the guard in Liverpool’s attack.
Rodrygo’s time at Real Madrid has never been simple. Despite moments of magic and being described as “spectacular,” he has often found himself overshadowed by the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham.

As the original article notes, “Rodrygo has spent time reflecting on his future and how he can fit into the Real Madrid team… His role has been reduced, and it will take a positive and clear approach from the next coach to convince him to stay.”
The uncertainty is understandable. Less than two months ago, Rodrygo reaffirmed his commitment to the club. Now, whispers suggest he may be reconsidering his long-term prospects in the Spanish capital: “Sources have confirmed he has now been questioning his place at the club for the first time and would be open-minded about where he could land next.”
For Liverpool, the timing is significant. The post-Klopp era under Slot is beginning to take shape, and there is a palpable sense that evolution — not revolution — is the way forward.
Much depends on the future of Luis Diaz. The Colombian is reportedly being tracked by Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia and Barcelona, with the latter a club close to Diaz’s heart. Should he move, Liverpool’s interest in Rodrygo may move from theoretical to practical.
“For Liverpool, a serious approach is more likely to happen if Luis Diaz departs,” GIVEMESPORT revealed.
It wouldn’t be the first time Liverpool explored the Rodrygo option. Back in 2017, when the Brazilian was at Santos, the Reds made their first approach. He declined then. The interest was revived when he moved to Real Madrid, and Liverpool’s scouts have continued to keep tabs on him — particularly as a potential long-term successor to Mohamed Salah.
Though Salah’s future at the club now seems more stable, planning for the next five years still demands serious thought. “Liverpool do remain interested as part of a legacy plan,” the report explains, noting that a move could still happen “if he indicates a true desire to move on.”
Rodrygo’s versatility — a right-winger who can also operate effectively on the left — fits well within the tactical flexibility Slot is expected to demand. If Darwin Núñez is sold this summer, which appears possible, then the door may be open for a new dynamic forward.
“There is strong suspicion that Darwin Nunez will be sold by Liverpool in the summer,” GIVEMESPORT reports. Names like Alexander Isak and Benjamin Šeško are also being monitored, while Morgan Rogers and Kingsley Coman have been linked in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Harvey Elliott faces his own crossroads. Once dubbed the future of the club, Elliott is now grappling with a lack of Premier League starts. There’s frustration, but also resilience. According to sources, “he is buoyed by the fact the club are making it clear they will not push him out of the door.”
There’s interest from Brighton, but Elliott views it as a step down. Fulham have been mentioned in a possible swap for Antonee Robinson — but returning to Craven Cottage, where fans jeered him on previous visits, feels unlikely. Newcastle, with Champions League football and a clear need for midfield creativity, may present a more suitable option.
Should Liverpool make a formal move for Rodrygo, it would not only be a statement signing but a tactical one. He would offer Arne Slot a level of adaptability and flair on either flank, something few current Liverpool players possess at the same level.
His pace, dribbling, and instinct for goals would complement the more physical presence of Cody Gakpo or a possible new No. 9, while offering genuine rotation and cover for Salah.
It is also worth noting that Rodrygo brings experience well beyond his 23 years. He has played in Champions League finals, scored vital goals for Los Blancos, and faced the pressures of leading a global superpower. He may be marginalised in Madrid now, but that does not dull the pedigree he would bring to Anfield.
As GIVEMESPORT rightly observed: “Rodrygo will carefully survey his situation before making the huge call on whether he could truly move on from the club of his dreams.”
Whether Liverpool remain his dream destination remains to be seen — but should Diaz leave, and should Rodrygo signal his intent, the scenario becomes one worth watching very closely.
This is the type of rumour that sets your pulse racing. Rodrygo, still only 23 and already a Champions League winner, could actually be attainable? It’s a dream that once seemed impossible, but now? Now it’s real enough to dare believe. Sure, £850 million is nonsense — no one’s paying that — but we all know release clauses rarely reflect actual sale value.
Slot’s arrival signals the start of a new Liverpool era, and it’s not about replacing Klopp — it’s about evolution. Rodrygo fits that perfectly. A player with flair, Champions League pedigree, and something to prove. You can just picture him in red, dancing down the right or left, feeding off the Anfield energy. If Diaz goes, it’s a no-brainer.
Yes, Salah’s staying, but we need rotation. We’ve seen what burnout looks like. With Núñez likely to be sold, and options like Isak and Šeško under review, this could be the chance to build the most exciting front line since Salah-Mane-Firmino.
Some might call it fantasy. But after all the Klopp memories, we’ve earned the right to dream again. Rodrygo to Liverpool? Stranger things have happened.
