Liverpool’s pursuit of a more clinical and tactically flexible forward appears to be gathering momentum, with Joao Pedro of Brighton now at the centre of attention. As reported by TEAMtalk, the Premier League champions are “seriously considering a move” for the Brazilian, who has impressed at the Amex since his £30m move from Watford in 2023.
Pedro has enjoyed a strong campaign, netting 10 goals and providing six assists in 27 Premier League appearances, proving his adaptability and creativity across the front line. At just 23, and with his ability to play centrally or from wide positions, Pedro fits the mould for an Arne Slot system that demands intelligent movement and high pressing.
As TEAMtalk revealed, “Pedro’s versatility, work rate, and proven Premier League pedigree make him an ideal candidate” for Liverpool’s evolving style. It’s that tactical fluidity, more than raw stats alone, that appears to have caught the eye of the Reds’ backroom staff.

Darwin Nunez has polarised opinion since arriving at Anfield in 2022. Though he’s contributed 40 goals and 26 assists across 141 appearances, consistency in front of goal has often eluded the Uruguayan. Sources told TEAMtalk that Liverpool are “open to selling him”, and this latest interest in Pedro seems to signal a readiness to pivot in a new direction.
While Nunez’s physicality and energy have never been questioned, his lack of composure in crucial moments has arguably held the Reds back. With Diogo Jota’s persistent injury issues compounding the problem, Slot’s desire for a more reliable frontman is understandable.
TEAMtalk added further intrigue, stating: “Liverpool see Pedro as a potential long-term replacement for Darwin Nunez.”
It appears Liverpool’s pursuit of Pedro is not reactionary. According to TEAMtalk, the club’s recruitment team – now under the reinstalled stewardship of Michael Edwards – has been tracking the striker since his Watford days. This long-term scouting indicates a level of trust in Pedro’s development and readiness for the top tier of English football.
“Sources have indicated that Liverpool’s recruitment team… has been tracking Pedro for years,” TEAMtalk noted. That kind of diligence is characteristic of Edwards’ data-led approach, and it aligns with the club’s historical preference for buying players just before their market value explodes.

Pedro is under contract with Brighton until 2028, and TEAMtalk reports that any deal would likely exceed £60 million. With Arsenal and Chelsea also said to be monitoring the player, Liverpool may need to act swiftly to avoid a summer saga.
“Negotiations are expected to be challenging,” TEAMtalk added, but noted that Liverpool could initiate contact “as early as next week.”
Brighton’s negotiating stance is famously firm – they held out for top dollar for Moisés Caicedo and Marc Cucurella – so it’s unlikely they’ll let Pedro go without a fight. But Liverpool’s decisive, forward-looking approach under Slot and Edwards could give them the edge.
From a fan’s perspective, this interest in Joao Pedro feels strategic rather than speculative. There’s a clear move toward intelligent, versatile attackers who can operate across multiple roles. Pedro isn’t just a goal scorer – he’s a connector, a creator, and someone who suits the kind of fluid system Slot has already made his own in his title-winning debut season.
Letting Nunez go would be a bold decision, but one that increasingly feels inevitable. Despite his industry and infectious energy, his missed chances have been costly. Pedro might not be the finished article either, but his ceiling – especially under a manager like Slot – appears higher and more suited to the demands of elite competition.
There’s also a psychological edge to this transfer. Beating Arsenal and Chelsea to a player they’ve also been linked with would reinforce Liverpool’s status as a club that attracts top young talent. With Champions League football returning and a Premier League title to defend, depth and tactical variety are essential. Pedro ticks both boxes.
Most Liverpool fans would likely welcome this kind of progressive, long-term thinking – especially if the club can get business done early and decisively.
