Arne Slot’s Liverpool welcome a crisis-hit Manchester United to Anfield in a huge derby looking to maintain their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League on Sunday afternoon
The game will be broadcast on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League, with kick-off at 16:30.
Liverpool (4-3-3): Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Van Dijk, Robertson, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Salah, Jones, Gakpo, Diaz
Man United (4-2-3-1): Onana, Yoro, Maguire, Martinez, Mazraoui, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dalot, Diallo, Fernandes, Hojlund
The Reds could be without up to four players for this huge clash, but their biggest dilemma will be in defence after Joe Gomez suffered a hamstring problem in the 5-0 win at West Ham last time out.
Slot confirmed Gomez would be out for a while after picking up the issue while sprinting at the London Stadium, meaning he’ll have to select the less experienced Jarell Quansah or take a chance on Ibrahima Konate, who hasn’t played in seven games after a knee injury but trained with the team for the first time on Friday.
The Dutchman said he would wait to decide on which centre-back would play alongside Virgil van Dijk given that Konate’s late fitness test. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson should continue at full-back while Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister are set to continue their partnership in midfield.
In attack, you cannot leave out Mohammed Salah after his incredible recent form while Cody Gakpo. Luis Diaz should continue too after scoring against the Hammers last time out. Slot will be eager to keep momentum in his side and could leave the rest of his XI untouched. However, Diogo Jota’s return from injury and goal vs West Ham could prove persuasive on that front.
Follow the straightforward steps below to claim this offer.
United boss Ruben Amorim will be relieved to welcome back midfield duo Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes from suspension for this game. Both should go straight into his starting XI.
In defence, Amorim has the option of bringing Leny Yoro back into the fold after he was benched against Newcastle. Elsewhere, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez look sure of keeping their places in the back three.
Casemiro and Christian Eriksen both started the last game but looked well off the pace, so expect Ugarte to come back alongside Mainoo, who was surprisingly dropped against the Magpies.
Amad Diallo is set to start on the right flank. After Joshua Zirzkee’s performance to forget, the Dutchman should be replaced here by the returning Fernandes – with Hojlund starting up front despite his sketchy form in front of goal.
United couldn’t have thought their new era under Amorim would go this badly. It’s safe to say the honeymoon period is officially over, if it ever really began. Their miserable 2-0 home loss to Newcastle was their fourth straight defeat in all competitions and their third consecutive in the league without scoring a single goal.
Their dismal form could not have come at a worse time against the league leaders. By contrast, Liverpool have won four games in a row and scored 14 goals in their last three Premier League games. Most significantly they have Salah in inspired form. He has contributed at least one goal in each of his last seven games, a run which has seen him score eight and assist seven in that time.
Liverpool won the reverse game 3-0 at Old Trafford, when Erik ten Hag was United boss. Yet despite Amorim being hailed as the club’s saviour, he has now picked up more unwanted records. Since he took charge on November 24, only Southampton (7) have lost more games in all competitions, while his side have let in 21 goals – the most along with Spurs.
He’s lost six of his 11 games as United boss, the worst start by a manager at Old Trafford since Walter Crickmer in 1931-32. The team’s total of 22 points from 19 games is their lowest at the halfway point of a 38-game Premier League season and their worst effort since the 1989-90 campaign.
