Liverpool welcome Ipswich Town to Anfield this weekend with the Premier League title in their sights.

The Reds extended their lead at the top of the table to six points last weekend, after Darwin Nunez’s late double at Brentford. Liverpool then beat Lille in midweek to secure Champions League progress.

Arne Slot’s side are going strong on all fronts, ahead of the visit of struggling Ipswich. The visitors were thrashed 6-0 by Manchester City last time out and are 18th in the table.

Saturday’s fixture will be the first between the teams in the league at Anfield since 2002. That contest saw Gerard Houllier’s Liverpool run out 5-0 winners to relegate Ipswich from the Premier League.

Liverpool team news

Arne Slot has confirmed that Curtis Jones will miss this weekend’s clash. The midfielder was withdrawn at half-time during the win over Lille on Tuesday night after picking up a knock. Ryan Gravenberch was also taken off at the break, though there are no concerns around the Dutchman who was rested for the second half.

Diogo Jota and Joe Gomez remain the only other absentees for Liverpool this weekend.

Harvey Elliott is pushing for a start after his deflected winner in Europe. Slot has said the midfielder’s performances in training warrant more minutes.

“Keep bringing performances in like he did and keep working as hard on the training ground as he’s doing as well. I always say to the players it’s not only about you, it’s also about the competition you are in,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“And in his situation he’s in competition with five very good midfielders that you know and there are a few youngsters coming through that are very talented as well but they are not close to playing time yet. But he’s in competition with Wata [Wataru Endo], with Ryan [Gravenberch], with Curtis [Jones], with Macca [Alexis Mac Allister] and himself, so these are the midfielders we have at the moment. He has to bring performances like he does and then playing time will probably increase.”
