According to Sky Sports' Transfer Centre (January 30, 13.50), the Hatters have returned with a new approach for the forward following the rejection of a £6 million bid earlier this week.

Kone has scored 16 times for the League One side so far this season, and was a key figure for Matt Bloomfield before he made the switch to Kenilworth Road earlier this month.

The new Luton boss is attempting to raid his former club for the 21-year-old ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

Luton have submitted a £7 million offer to Wycombe for Kone, that is believed to be worth £4 million up front, with another £3 million in add-ons.

It was reported by Pete O’Rourke on Wednesday evening that the third tier side rejected an offer valued at £6 million.

It was exclusively revealed earlier this week by Football League World that Wanderers have no interest in cashing in on Kone this month despite major offers.

Kone has a contract with Wycombe until the summer of 2026, meaning there is no immediate need to cash in.

Luton are looking to bolster their attacking options amid pressure at the bottom of the Championship table, with the team at risk of suffering back-to-back relegations.

It remains to be seen whether Wycombe can be convinced by this fresh offer, with it understood that the Adams Park outfit are currently considering it.

Richard Kone’s importance to Wycombe Wanderers

Kone linked up with Wycombe halfway through last season from non-league outfit Athletic Newham, making 17 appearances in League One as Wanderers finished 10th in the table.

He has grown into a crucial part of the side though in 2024-25, and is the current top scorer in the third tier this year with 16 goals.

Wycombe are in the mix for automatic promotion to the Championship, so will be hoping to hold onto their key players beyond the January window.

Meanwhile, Luton are 23rd in the table, three points adrift of safety after 29 games played each.

Luton Town should not go much higher in Richard Kone transfer pursuit

Upgrading their offer from £6 million to £7 million is a pretty meagre increase and is unlikely to convince Wycombe to cash in.

The Hatters also likely need to guarantee more up front in the offer if they’re to earn Kone’s signature this month.

It’s obvious that Bloomfield wants to reunite with his former striker, and the club should be doing what they can to back the new manager.

Given their precarious league position, this is a move they should be pushing harder for, as they may as well move on to other targets if this is as high as they’re willing to go.
