Lyon were facing the prospect of an exclusion from the UEFA Europa League due to their financial situation, L’Equipe can reveal. The outlet has revealed that UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body handed Lyon a provisional exclusion from the current Europa League campaign in December 2024. Lyon eventually finished sixth in the Europa League standings, which means Les Gones have qualified for the RO16.
UEFA adds in a statement that the CFCB found that Lyon’s 2024 finances “failed to comply with the core underlying principle of going concern. Consequently, the CFCB First Chamber decided to disqualify Olympique Lyonnais from 2024/25 UEFA club competitions unless it submitted by 30 January 2025 the said financial statements with a clean audit opinion from its auditors, i.e. without disclaimer, adverse or qualified opinion, in respect of going concern”.
UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body reveals that the Eagle Football-owned Ligue 1 club took necessary actions for the CFCB First Chamber to reverse their decision as “Lyon has fulfilled the condition imposed by the CFCB within the set deadline.” UEFA adds that the CFCB First Chamber will “carefully monitor OL’s compliance with the financial sustainability requirements in accordance with the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Sustainability Regulations.“
